History of Da Capo

In 1863, the entrepreneur Rudolph Sack founded a machine factory with five employees in Leipzig-Plagwitz on the recommendation of the Leipzig lawyer and entrepreneur Karl Heine. The site was constantly expanded through the purchase of land and the construction of several new factory buildings. In 1894, the company expanded to the property at Karl-Heine-Straße 103/105, where the gray iron foundry was relocated - today's Da Capo.

In its 50th anniversary year, 1913, the company employed 2,000 people on a total area of 75,000 m². Until 1945, «Rud. Sack KG” was one of the leading plow and agricultural machinery factories in Germany. After the Second World War, the company was initially shut down and taken over in trust by the state government of Saxony in 1946. In September 1947, over 1,000 employees were working here again.

From 1948, agricultural machinery was produced under the name VEB Leipziger Bodenbearbeitungsgeräte (BBG) until the end of the GDR. In the early 1990s, Munich-based building contractor Manfred Rübesam acquired 15 hectares of former industrial sites in Plagwitz from the Treuhand, including the former BBG factories. With the «vision” of high-rise buildings in mind, Rübesam started a more down-to-earth project in Plagwitz at the end of 2000 and opened the former BBG hall he had renovated with his nostalgia collection - Da Capo Leipzig began to take shape.

At the beginning of 2002, we as Hotel Michaelis GmbH took over the Da Capo as tenant and operator and have been able to continuously develop it into a popular and successful event location in Leipzig to this day - despite Mr. Rübesam's insolvency and the sale of the property.

In connection with Mr. Rübesam's insolvency, all of his classic cars were sold in 2007. Thanks to the dedicated help of our partner Stefan Werner from Sunset Limousines, we were able to present a spectacular «new” collection of classic cars at Da Capo that is well worth seeing. The classic cars currently on display are on loan from private classic car owners and enthusiasts.
