Da Capo vintage automobile museum

Gleaming original historic automobile

This automobile museum is part of the »Da Capo Vintage Car Museum & Event Hall«, and has been operated by Michaelis since 2002. In the elegant former factory building with the aeroplane on its roof visitors can admire classic cars covering 100 years of automobile history, and discover vehicles from England, the USA, the Czech Republic and Germany. However, the Da Capo automobile museum is a great deal more than just a museum. You can also experience Leipzig in style: some of the vintage cars on display can be rented, complete with chauffeur.

The Da Capo story

In 1863, on the recommendation of Leipzig lawyer Karl Heine, the businessman Rudolph Sack established a machine shop with five workers in Leipzig-Plagwitz. The enterprise was extended regularly, with the purchase of more land and the construction of further factory buildings. In 1894 the company expanded to the site of Karl-Heine Str. 103/105, which became the base of an iron foundry which today is Da Capo.

By the company's 50th anniversary in 1913 it employed a workforce of 2,000 on an area of 75,000 m². Up to 1945 »Rud. Sack KG« was one of Germany's leading producers of agricultural machinery. After the Second World War the company was first mothballed, and was then from 1946 onwards administered by the state government of Saxony. By September 1947 the factory once more employed more than 1,000 workers.

From 1948, under the name of 'VEB Leipziger Bodenbearbeitungsgeräte (BBG)', it produced agricultural machinery until the end of the GDR. In the early 90s the Munich building contractor Manfred Rübesam acquired from the Treuhand privatisation agency 15 hectares of former industrial property in Plagwitz, including the former BBG factories. Although he had originally begun with plans for apartment blocks, at the end of the year 2000 Rübesam launched a more down-to-earth project in Plagwitz, restoring the former BBG factory hall and making it the home of his collection of classic cars – Da Capo Leipzig was born.

Early in 2002 we at Hotel Michaelis GmbH leased Da Capo and to the present day, – in spite of Rübesam's insolvency and the sale of the property – we have continued to develop it into one of Leipzig's most popular and successful event locations.

As a result of Mr Rübesam's insolvency all his vintage cars were sold in the year 2007. Thanks to the dedicated support of our partner Stefan Werner from the firm of Sunset Limousines we then succeeded in presenting a spectacular and memorable »neue« collection of classic automobiles at Da Capo. The vintage cars which are currently on display have been loaned by their owners, private classic car enthusiasts.
